Concrete joints and seams play an important role in protecting slabs from water damage. Over time, the sealant between concrete sections can crack, shrink, or wear away. When this happens, water can enter the joints and begin to erode the soil beneath the concrete.

Why Concrete Joints Need Caulking

Concrete naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes. Joints are designed to allow this movement while preventing damage to the slab. However, when the sealant inside those joints deteriorates, water can enter and begin causing problems beneath the concrete.

Common reasons concrete joints fail include:

• Sealant shrinking or cracking over time
• Water infiltration into expansion joints
• Exposure to weather and temperature changes
• Wear from vehicle traffic
• Poor or aging joint sealant

When water enters these joints, it can wash away the soil beneath the slab. This often leads to voids and settlement, which may eventually require void filling or concrete leveling to repair.

Signs Your Concrete Needs Caulking

Damaged or missing joint sealant is often easy to spot if you look closely at the seams between concrete sections.

You may need concrete caulking if you notice:

• Gaps forming along expansion joints
• Water entering joints during rain
• Loose debris or weeds growing in joints
